Buy an Apartment or Rent It? Explain Your Answer

It’s the kind of discussion renters often obsess over: “If I could buy my apartment, would I?”

The answer often varies by neighborhood. In some neighborhoods like Park Slope, Brooklyn, it may be cheaper to rent than carry a mortgage for the same amount of space. On parts of the Upper East Side, the rent-versus-buy calculations are more unclear. Some residents downtown swear that renting gives them an apartment they could never afford to buy — especially if they are renting an apartment the landlord is renting out for less than the mortgage.

This week’s Appraisal column explores whether it is worth it to residents of one Brooklyn complex to purchase their apartments. For one young family, it makes sense. For another longtime resident, there are better deals to be found elsewhere.

The Appraisal wants to know, given comparable prices for apartments in your neighborhood, would you buy your home? Do you have a rent-regulated deal so good that you would never consider buying an apartment? Do you have a rent that is so high that you are feverishly saving to buy?

Let us know your thoughts.

Death Toll in Bus Crash Reaches 15

The death toll of Saturday’s bus crash has climbed to 15 people, as a 70-year-old male passenger has succumbed to injuries he sustained in the crash, according to a spokesman for St. Barnabas Hospital in the Bronx, where the man was being treated.

The spokesman, Howard Matzner, would not disclose the passenger’s identity or describe the nature of the injuries the man received when the bus he was riding overturned and then split open against a sign stanchion. The bus was returning to Manhattan from an overnight trip to the Mohegan Sun casino in Uncasville, Conn. The crash occurred on the Bronx-Westchester border.

Mr. Matzner said the man had been taken directly to the hospital from the crash site “in very serious condition” and died Monday morning.
