Urban Forager | Sweet Wineberry

Sweet wineberries — relatives of raspberries — aren’t available by the pint in supermarkets, but they should be. In the last few weeks, this citrusy wild fruit, which tastes like a cross between a raspberry and a California orange, has been ripening throughout the metro area, growing along roadsides, park trails and on the edges of clearings.

Wineberry (Rubus phoenicolasius), a k a Japanese wineberry or wine raspberry, is a thorny perennial with orangey-red thimble-shaped fruit that is hollow when plucked from the stem like a raspberry. Unlike its Rubus cousin, wineberries have sticky reddish, thorny hairs surrounding the fruit and traveling down the stems, giving them a slightly menacing look rather like the pirate Redbeard. The plant’s compound leaves appear in the form of three heart-shaped, pointy leaflets, which like those of raspberries, are characteristically green on top, but white underneath with saw-toothed edges.

Wineberries’ hairy canes can grow to 10 feet, and like those of another relative, the black raspberry (Rubus occidentalis), they dip back to the ground and reroot at the tips, creating looping arches like brambly chuppahs.

Native to Asia, Rubus phoenicolasius was introduced here as an ornamental and for breeding with raspberries, but soon became naturalized, and in some places, invasive. It can be found as far west as Illinois and Arkansas, and as far south as Georgia.

Invasive or not, this juicy fruit is a bright and tangy surprise to the palate. The first time I ate a wineberry on a nature hike a few years ago, I thought I’d bitten into the world’s tastiest blood orange.

Euell Gibbons, in “Stalking the Wild Asparagus,” enjoyed wineberries sugared with sweet cream, but usually froze the surplus for reserves beyond the summer season.

Notwithstanding the name, Gibbons wrote that he had never heard of anyone making an alcoholic beverage from it, but I suppose it would make a pleasant sweet wine or liquor. After 20 minutes of braving the sticky, prickly canes, my reward for all the scratches is usually to gobble up all the wineberries before I even make it home.

For Judge Accustomed to Harsh Cases, Volunteering for Something Sunnier

As the administrative judge of the Bronx criminal division state Supreme Court, Justice Efrain Alvarado usually spends his days presiding over the grimiest of cases.

“On a regular day I’ll go through about 40 or 50 charges,” Justice Alvarado said. Some of them, he said, are among “the most serious charges to come into light within the penal code in the State of New York.”

However on Sunday morning, when the city opens its doors for its first gay marriages, he will get a chance to try something new. Justice Alvarado is one of about 70 volunteer judges who will appear at clerk’s offices around the city to offer couples exemptions from the 24-hour waiting period that is normally required after the issuing of a marriage license.

“Its always a pleasure to do something within the realm of my job that doesn’t involve holding people’s lives in one’s hands,” Justice Alvarado said.

For no pay and long hours, Justice Alvarado said his only gain will be “being a part of history.”
