Reader Tales From the City
Looking down from my fourth-floor apartment window, I saw what at first seemed to be a religious event: a candle-bearing church processional on West 60th Street headed toward Columbus Circle.
Then I realized what it was. Pedestrians on the sidewalk were walking slowly, almost in a line, toward the subway, each holding an electronic gadget, listening, reading, texting or talking, with the face of each gadget tilted upward, emitting a bluish glow as dusk fell.
The new devotion seems to have risen in the land.
