Update, 10:11 p.m. | The boyfriend of a fashion designer was charged Friday night with second-degree attempted murder and second-degree strangulation in her death at an upscale hotel, the police said. The man, Nicholas Brooks, 24, a son of an Oscar-winning songwriter, was charged in the death of Sylvie Cachay, “based on the condition of the deceased’s body and the investigation, to date,” said Paul W. Browne, the main police spokesman.

The body of Ms. Cachay, 33, was found in an overflowing bathtub at the Soho House hotel in the Meatpacking District early Thursday morning.

Mr. Browne said that Mr. Brooks “made statements” to detectives, but had not made self incriminating ones.

“He talked to us, but he has not confessed,” Mr. Browne said, adding: “We have enough at this point to charge him with attempted murder and strangulation in the degrees cited.”

Earlier Friday, the authorities had said that the autopsy on Ms. Cachay was inconclusive and that further tissue and toxicology tests would be necessary to determine the cause and manner of Ms. Cachay’s death.

Mr. Brooks and Ms. Cachay had arrived at the hotel early Thursday. Shortly before 3 a.m., water from their room began leaking into the floor below, and workers found Ms. Cachay, half-clothed in an overflowing tub. Mr. Brooks was not present when her body was found but returned to the room minutes later.

Investigators had said that Ms. Cachay’s body had “some redness in the area of her collarbone” and a bite mark on one hand.
