A 22-year-old carjacking suspect was fatally shot by the police in a firefight after a predawn car crash in Cypress Hills, Brooklyn, on Thursday, the police said.
The man, whose name was not immediately released, was suspected in an earlier shooting and carjacking attempt and a successful carjacking, both in Queens, said the head police spokesman, Paul J. Browne, who offered the following account.
At about 4:10 a.m., the man crashed a car into a pole on Jamaica Avenue and Cypress Hills Street near the Queens border and walked away, wearing a mask and carrying a .22 caliber revolver.
An off-duty police lieutenant followed him, and several blocks away, at Hemlock Street, the man fired at the lieutenant, who returned fire and struck the suspect. The man was pronounced dead at Brookdale University Hospital and Medical Center. The gun was recovered at the scene.
