Off-Duty Detective Fatally Shoots Robber, Police Say

An off-duty police detective fatally shot a teenager who tried to rob him Sunday night in Bushwick, Brooklyn, according to the police, who offered the following account:

The detective was approached from behind about 11:45 p.m. on Grove Street near Broadway by two young men. One hit him in the head with a cane. The other simulated a gun and demanded money.

The detective identified himself as a police officer and fired once, striking the 17-year-old who had hit him with the cane.

The other man fled but was arrested not far away.

The detective was taken to Wyckoff Heights Medical Center for treatment of his head injury. The police did not immediately release the names of the detective or the suspects.
