Pedestrians Injured After Three-Car Wreck Spills Onto Sidewalk in Midtown

At least 10 people were injured Saturday night after a three-vehicle accident at the intersection of 42nd Street and Avenue of the Americas in Midtown, the police said.

A police spokesman said that shortly after 9 p.m. a black Jaguar heading westbound on 42nd Street struck a gray Chevrolet Impala waiting at the traffic light. The impact caused the Impala to swerve into a taxicab with two people inside. The Jaguar then lost control, careering into a bustling sidewalk, striking at least four pedestrians before rolling onto its side and hitting a tree.

The police spokesman said that no one was “likely to die,” but that eight people, including four pedestrians, were taken to Bellevue Hospital Center for treatment. Two people who were injured refused medical treatment at the scene, he said.

The driver of the Jaguar was trapped inside the vehicle, requiring rescue workers to remove the roof.

After the accident, several witnesses said they heard calls for help from inside one of the vehicles.

The intersection remained closed two hours after the accident. The police spokesman did not know when it was going to reopen.

The police said the cause was under investigation.
