Suspect Identified in Purse-Snatching From Woman in Wheelchair

The police have identified the teenager they say snatched the purse of a wheelchair-bound 78-year-old woman on a Brooklyn street.

Suffice it to say that Cody Santiago, 18, of Grove Street in Bushwick is now a wanted man.

At 1:09 p.m. on July 20, the police say, the victim was riding her wheelchair down the sidewalk of Wyckoff Avenue near Bleecker Street in Bushwick.

Surveillance video released by the police shows a man looking over his shoulder at the wheelchair and walking in front of it casually for a while — it is hard not to use the word “sauntering.”

The man eventually walks out of the frame then apparently turns around. He walks back toward the woman, grabs the purse off her lap, and runs off.

The bag that Mr. Santiago took contained $15, a benefit card and prescription medication, the police said.

People with information about Mr. Santiago’s whereabouts are asked to contact the Police Department’s Crime Stoppers unit by phone (1-800-577-8477), Web site or text (send “TIPS 577,” followed by the message, to 274637).
