Want to Catch a Thief? There’s an App for That

The police arrested a 23-year-old Queens man on Friday for stealing an iPhone earlier in the week — and they found him with the aid of an app.

Before the phone was stolen, the victim of the crime, a 31-year-old woman, downloaded a mobile application that would snap a photograph if someone tried to unlock the phone using an incorrect password, and then e-mail that picture to her. The app, iGotYa, which is available online but is not for sale through iTunes, did its duty, the police said. When a young man with short hair and an earring peered into the newly-nabbed phone earlier this week, his photo was taken, and the victim quickly passed it along to law enforcement officials.

The police identified the suspect as Brian Chattoo. A police spokesman said that plain clothes officers recognized the young man from his picture.
