Police are looking for a man they say accepted deposits as large as $2,300 from six apartment hunters in Queens, only to disappear with the money.
The would-be tenants responded to a flier that had been placed on a utility pole advertising vacant apartments in Elmhurst. A man showed them apartments and collected deposits from them, totaling $9,950. After taking each deposit, the man disconnected his phone number and disappeared. The crimes occurred last October and November.
The man, who can be seen on the video above, is a dark-haired Hispanic male. A police advisory says he is in his 30s, weighs about 150 pounds, and is between 5-foot-8 and 5-foot-10.
Anyone with information about the bogus rental agent is asked to contact the Police Department’s Crime Stoppers unit.
