A teacher’s aide at Public School 84 on West 92nd Street was arrested on charges that he groped an 8-year-old girl and made her touch him, the police said on Thursday.
The aide, Hany Abdalla, 35, was charged with sex abuse and endangering the welfare of a child, the police said. Mr. Abdalla “touched a female child 8 years old in inappropriate areas and also had her touch him in inappropriate areas,” a police spokesman said.
The Education Department said that Mr. Abdalla, an aide at the school since 2007 with no prior disciplinary record, was accused on Monday of making inappropriate remarks to a child. He was then suspended without pay and the case was referred to law enforcement authorities, who turned up the allegation of sexual touching. Mr. Abdalla was arrested on Wednesday, the police said.
The Education Department did not immediately provide details on what grade classroom Mr. Abdalla worked in at the school, which is at 32 West 92nd Street near Central Park West.
Mr. Abdalla is at least the eighth public-school employee to be arrested this year on sexual offenses involving students. The string of arrests prompted Schools Chancellor Dennis M. Walcott to order a review of 12 years of substantiated misconduct cases and to vow to remove any teacher who had engaged in sexually inappropriate behavior.
